What equipment do you use?
I use very simple equipment to achieve my sophisticated ideas. I shoot with a Canon Rebel XSi, one of the cheapest entry-level DSLR cameras.

The lens I mainly use is my kit lens (18mm - 55mm), but I also shoot with my plastic portrait lens (50mm) or my LensBaby. Sometimes I combine old film lenses on top of my DSLR lens. It's funny.

Do you use natural light or artificial lighting?
I design the lighting for every shot. I use two remote-controlled flashes (Canon 580 EXII + Quantaray 500W) that are triggered by Pocketwizards.

When shooting in daylight, the sun is my third light and it's used quite effectively.

Do you have a studio?
Yes I do! I live and work in the Chinatown Artists' Lofts where I have a beautiful red brick courtyard and garden. Although I have done shoots indoors, I love shooting outdoors. Architecture and backdrops are an important element to my photos. I also think it's far more impressive to actually hike to a beach than photoshop one in.

Do you require a deposit?
Yes, to book and secure your photoshoot date, a 30%-75% deposit is required. Until the deposit is received, the date is still up for grabs.

How do I get my photos?
Your photos will be uploaded to our proofing site on NextProof.com. After you select your final photos, the high resolution files can be sent to you via SendSpace.com or burned on a CD/DVD. Most people choose to digitally download their files because it's quicker.

What is Firebird Photography Named After?
I named Firebird Photography after two symbolic things: The Chinese Phoenix who rises from the ashes a more beautiful creature, and the 1970's Muscle Car, the Firebird.

Who are your inspirations?
I have shelves full of Mid-century books and encyclopedias that span the 1930's - 1970's. I am also inspired by TV shows like Mad Men, the films of Wes Anderson and the overall genius and analogue creativity of Michel Gondry.
